Beautiful Savannah Churches

Well it sure has been a busy week here. Seems that the phone has rung non stop, which is a good thing, but solving peoples problems can sure wear you out. I have welcomed having some down time today.

Anyway, while looking through some photos for my Shadow Shot Sunday Post, I happened upon some that I took a few years ago of the beautiful churches in Savannah. I hope you enjoy.

I think my favorite was The Cathedral of St. John The Baptist.

It is such a beautiful church inside and out, with its wonderfully detailed stained glass windows. 

The sun was shining so brightly through the windows, it was hard to get a picture.

As I got closer the details of the windows seemed to just jump right out at you. 

When I zoomed in on the individual windows, the surroundings got darker, but it made the stained glass show up even better.

Every direction I turned there was beautiful windows.

The wood work was just as detailed, but didn't show up very well in my photos.

Another one of my favorites was The Independent Presbyterian Church. This church is the one seen in the movie Forest Gump. (the scene when the feather is floating down)

 

The St. John's Episcopal Church was a very pretty church also. I was using a smaller camera then and couldn't get a picture of the entire church. But, I did mamage to capture some lovely tree shadows on the side of the building.  

My last group of pictures are of The Temple Mickve Isreal. The synagogue has a museum that displays objects and documents relating to Jewish life in early Savannah. 

Savannah is such a beautiful place with so many wonderful things to see and do. So many streets with Spanish Moss hanging from the trees, (which make wonderful shadows by the way), so many Big Beautiful houses, cobblestone streets, restaurants galore, art museums, tons of historical sites, and Tybee Island Beach nearby. A picture taking tourists can find so many things to photograph. I know I sure did!!

Shadows From The Fifthteenth Floor

Last weekend we took a trip to Louisville. 

Our hotel was a couple of blocks from the river, and our room was on the 15th floor. It was a nice view. I loved the small lighthouses on top of the Galt House West Buildings. Being a lighthouse nut, it was neat to see these looking out our window, especially at night.

It is amazing how many shadows you can see from the fiftheenth floor.

Like this little tree which was in the parking lot across the street from our hotel.

Or the tressel on top of the Convention Center.

 



I just had to zoom in on it so it would show up in pictures more clearly.

The objects on the street below looked small, especially the fire hydrant in between the street posts and the shrub. 

But, once I zoomed in on them, they looked more realistic. And, had such clear shadows.

After I took this picture, I looked to my right and about 100 birds were flying over the roof of a building below and as they flew over they were casting the most wonderful shadows on the roof, but by the time I got my camera focused in that direction they were gone. It would have been such a great shot.

My daughter and I did a little sight seeing while we were there. We walked around and did a little window shopping and then decided to walk down to the river. It was very hot and humid so we decided to walk through the pedways. We had to follow them through the Convention Center, a parking garage and two hotels, but we thought it would be better than walking in the heat and full sun outside.

The first one weren't too bad. The sun was shining through the glass, but there was air conditioning too. And, of course where there is sun, there are shadows. We thought this was much better than walking in the hot sun, plus we got to see a bit of the buildings we were walking through. 

 

As we went from one building to the next the pedways changed. This one was glass on both sides. You could feel the warmth of the sun shinging in, but there was still air flowing inside so it wasn't too bad. 

 

Until we reached this one. It was like stepping in to an oven. There was NO air what so ever stiring, and you could hear it pop as you went through it.

We finally reached the river walk. It took longer than I thought it would because of all the buildings we had to go through and the different floors we had to be on to follow the pedway. I think it would have been quicker to have just walked the street.

With all the walking, our feet were tired. On our way back my daughter took off her shoes while in the pedways. I couldn't resist taking a picture of her and her shadow.

Bridges and Shadows

My pictures this week are some that I took while out and about in our community.

The first one is from the River Walk. This bridge used to be a one lane, wooden floor automobile bridge, but a few years ago they closed it off after building the new road and bridge. It was then spruced up, and re-opened as a walking bridge. They built the rock walls and poured sidewalks making it into the River Walk that it is now. A very popular place for taking pictures, especially during Prom Season. Teens and their parents gather here for photos.

The second photo is the bridge closer to my house. It too is a one lane bridge. Local photographers use this area for photo sessions quite often. It is a less traveled road that circles back to the main road.
Local legend has it that this bridge is haunted. They say that you can stop your car in the middle of the bridge, shut off the motor and your car will roll to the other side. They also say that if you listen carefully at night you can hear ghostly sounds.
It has been a fun place to take the kids and their friends through their years growing up here. My daughter has loved going across this bridge, especially when she was a bit younger. Every time we would get close to the road leading to it she would start asking if we could drive across the bridge. Being the good Mom that I am, I usually would oblige.

She and her friends like to walk across it too. She isn't afraid of any old legendary ghost. (She is the one on the right here)

Sometimes you can hear strange sounds, but I think it is merely the old bridge creaking as you drive across, but who am I to debunk any ghostly legend. Anyway, it makes for interesting conversation, a few laughs and a few shadow pictures.

Statue of Liberty

This week I'd like to share a photo taken by a friend of mine on her recent trip to New York. She is in a Bowling League and they were participating in a Bowling Tournment in Syracuse, New York. Although, she didn't get to bowl due to having a broken arm.

I thought this was such a Great Photo.

Wordless Wednesday

Window Shadows

I woke up the other morning and the sun was shining brightly. The door in our living room has a blind on it and the sun's light was leaving shadows of the glass panes on the blind.
I decided I would raise the blind and allow the sunlight to illuminate the living room.







Once I raised the blind the shadows were then cast upon the floor. I snapped a couple of shots of the shadows that the sun was casting on the floor. My little dog, Peanut, was intriged by the shadows.

Peanut decided that he needed to investigate.
I kept trying to get him to come to the other side of the room, but I guess he wanted to be in my picture.

Eye Opening Week

This week I learned just how much we really notice the details of our everyday surroundings.

It was a beautifully sunny day. I was walking back from the post office, camera in hand just in case I come upon a shadow opt, when I noticed this big cross attached to the building a few doors down from our office. (Our office is the white building on the corner) I suppose it was the shadow on the cross that caught my eye. I know that the building is a church, but I had never noticed the cross before.

How on earth did I not notice this? I can't believe that I walk this street every day, even park in front of the church sometimes, yet I have never noticed the HUGE cross.

I asked my husband if he knew that the church a few doors down had a hugh cross out front. He said not that he has seen. He said it must be new.

So I did a little researching and found some street view pictures of the entire block from about a year ago. To my and my husband's suprise, there was the cross. We were amazed.

I guess sometimes you really can't see the forest for the trees.

Bug On The Window

I was in the kitchen washing some dishes when I happen to see something moving on the window. Then I realized it was a Praying Mantis. Usually I hate these things. They are so creepy. But this one was small and on the outside. So I watched him for a moment.




He slowly moved around the window. I noticed he was leaving a shadow as he moved about.

As he walked down onto the glass, I went outside to get a better shot. I took this picture and he began to sort of stop and sit up. I was afraid he was going to fly at me or something. So I went back inside. By the time I got back in, he was gone.

At least I did mamage to get a small shadow of the little creepy bug in this last shot.

Shadowy Fun

My pictures this week are some that were taken while my daughter and her friend were out in the yard being silly. I thought the shadows were kind of cool.




They were also jumping on the trampoline and I managed to capture one mid air shot just as the sun was going down.
