Showers and Storms

It sure has been a crazy week with all the storms and rain.
Everyday we have had heavy rain and storms.

Unlike alot of places in the south, the damage has only been a few tree branches down from the straight line winds. Several nights we have lost electricty, but they have managed to get it back on rather quickly.

Our main thing around here has been flooding. We drove across the old bridge the other day to see how high the river was.

As you can see in this picture, it was pretty high. The water was half way up the trees. There was alot of debris floating in the water also.

It was in between storms when we took these pictures, so the sun peaked out long enough for the trees shadow to be cast on the water.

Another road that we traveled past was covered with water.

This field now has a lake where hay usually grows.

With more rain being forecast for the coming week, crops may be a bit behind schedule.




At least all this rain has made the trees and grass a beautiful green. My daughter snapped this picture from inside the car as we drove home. You can see the reflection of the rear view mirror in the picture.

Doggy Shadows

This week my Shadow Shots are of my two little dogs. They like to lay or play in the sunny spots, and when they do, of course I feel the urge to grab the camera and capture their shadows.

The first shot is of our newest addition to the family, Sophie. She is a Chihuahua/Jack Russell Mix. She is only 4 months old, and VERY active.

We take her with us to the office every day, because I can't stand leaving her in her crate all day long.

She loves sneaking out of my office and into the lobby, where there are more windows to let the sun shine in. Plus there is a basket of toys in there too that she likes to get into.

My office is small and only has one window. And, lots of things she is not allowed to chew on. But she does like being where I am too.

She has her cushion to nap on when she wants.

Our other dog is Peanut. He is a Pekingese/Pomeranian Mix. He is 2 years old and is very protective. He goes crazy when strangers come around. This make it rather difficult to have him at the office much. When he is there he runs constantly from the front to the back barking at people walking by, All Day Long.

All that running makes him very tired when we get home.

Both dogs love playing with Beanie Babies. We have ALOT of them, (my daughter used to collect them, when she was little), and I allow them to have certain ones to play with.

Peanut thinks he is a guard dog. When he hears a car pull into the driveway or hears any noise outside, he climbs into his chair in the dinning room and barks like crazy. He has even learned to pull the curtain back so he can see better. It is so cute.

Sunset

Haven't had much sunshine lately. It has been cloudy and cold around here most of the week. So I decided to post some pictures of a beautiful Sunset from a few weeks ago. I had taken the dogs out after getting home from work and when I saw the beautiful red sky, I had to grab the camera.

Super Moon

So tonight we had a "Super Moon". It is the closest that the moon has been to the earth in 18 years.

The skys were a bit cloudy and I had to go out a couple of times to get my shots. But, it was worth it.

The moon was really bright and looked like it had a bright shining ring around it. I thought these would make good Shadow Shot Sunday pictures.

I played with the different settings on my camera and got some decent pictures.

When the clouds cleared, I was able to get a couple of close up shots, but in these you can't see the bright ring.

Finally We Have Sunshine

After all the snow that we have had this winter, it sure has been great to see the sun and feel a little warmth this week. We actually had a couple of days with the temperatures in the 70's. And, with the sun shining and the temps much warmer, I had to venture out with camera in tow.



While heading to lunch I happened to see these shadows over the door of City Hall.










Later as I walked to the Bank, I spotted this shadow. I thought it was interesting the way the shadow looks nothing like the bench.









One shot wasn't enough. I had to get a couple.








The trees behind the benches made some great shadows on the building.









And last but not least, the little shrubs leaving their image on the concrete.

Snowy Shadows

Well it certainly has been a snowy winter. I have to say that I have enjoyed the beautiful wintry scene. Below are a few pictures from our snow event this past Wednesday.

Here, Michael is cleaning off his car so that he can make the drive home.

The girls and I decided to hang around downtown for a bit longer to take a few pictures.

With the snow coming down and the temps falling, we soon headed to our car to make our way home also.

We were traveling at a slow speed, so Lindsey snapped a few pictures from the warmth of the car.

This is the bridge on Highway 185.

Here you can see the line of cars we were traveling with.

I think the rocks along the highway are so pretty with the snow and ice.

This highway has several rock and tree lined sections. It really is a beautiful route to travel.

Thursday morning, the snow plow made its way out our street. This is the first year that I have seen them plow here. It is a dead end street, with only 12 houses and usually doesn't get plowed. (I think the plow driver is related to one of our neighbors, so he takes the time to plow our little street)

With the sun shining Thursday morning, I ventured outside to capture the shadows being cast in the snow in our backyard.

And, of course I had to measure the snowfall while I was out there. Almost 6", bringing our total to 21.7 inches this winter, which is alot for us here.

January Update

Hello everyone here in Blog World. Not alot going on lately. Between the snow and sinus infections, I would just as soon stay in my nice warm house and not venture out until Spring.
This past week end I did just that. Of course the little slip and fall episode I had with the black ice in the parking lot of a local store made that real easy. I have been sooooooo sore, but at least it is getting better.

Kentucky Weather

I've heard people say that if you don't like the weather here in Kentucky to just stick around, because it will change.
Well the past few weeks has definitely proven that statement to be true. We have had some very cold temperatures, snow, ice, rain and sun.
On the 6th, I took my daughter to school and went back home for about an hour before heading to the office. In the hour that I was at home we received enough snow to cover the yard. The temperature was above freezing and the snow was a powdery snow so it stuck only to the ground, not the roads. Traveling was not a problem and it was gone by the next day.



Except for frozen ponds, I guess. I drive past this pond on the way to my daughter's school and I couldn't resist stopping to get a picture or two of this beautiful wintry scene. I like how the snow is only on the pond.







Plus, the trees were casting shadows on the snow covered pond. How could I not shoot that scene.









By the next week, the temperature was in the teens with wind chills in single digits. On the 13th we received three inches of snow. The kids were happy because school was canceled.

This picture is the small snow drift between my house and the neighbors.





Here is a small line in the snow behind our garage, not really sure what caused it, but thought it was interesting.

School was out for three days, but the first two were too cold for the girls to get out. By the third day they were ready to venture outside for a few pictures in the snow.

We thought that school would be out again due to the 1/4 inch of ice that covered everything on the night of the 15th. But by the next morning the ice was gone and it was raining. So off to school they went.
The next day the sun was shinning and everything was back to normal.
Awwww, Kentucky weather.

Evening Shadows

I haven't had much of a chance to catch many shadow shots this week. It has been a very busy week. But, I did happen to see this as we were locking up one night.

Every evening as we are leaving the Walk/Don't Walk light casts it's shadow on the wall inside the main lobby. You can also see part of the logo that is printed on the window.

Not a very exciting shadow, but a shadow none the less. Be sure to head over to Hey Harriet and check out what others have posted.

Fun With Shadows

I have three small tree/shrubs in my back yard close to the house. This week as I was walking through my living room I noticed the shadow being cast by one of them on my window, so being the shadow shot nut that I am, I grabbed my camera.

The funny thing is as I started to focus on my subject I noticed that the shadow was moving.

The wind was blowing making the limbs move. Here you can see part of the limbs.

But, wait just a few seconds and you can see more of the limbs.

Here you can see all three tree/shrubs.

I always have fun finding and posting shadow shots, but this week was especially fun as I watched the wind change the shadows.

Downtown Shadows

Often while walking to the Post Office or the Bank I see interesting shadows and wish that I had my camera. So I started carrying it with me as I do my errands.




Here are a few I found a few weeks ago.

The clock outside the Bank stands tall and casts its shadow on the sidewalk.

Just down from the Bank is a small patio area for one of the office buildings. The light post and trees were calling out to me as I walked by. The light post's shadow reminds me of a pear.

I think that my favorite shadow downtown is the shadow that the iron fence around the Veterans Statue at the old Courthouse casts. Not really sure what it is that I like so much about it.



The way it curves? The length? The way that you can see the details of the fence itself in the shadow? Maybe it is all of those things. Anyway, I hope that you enjoy the pictures. And, be sure visit Hey Harriet to see what unique shadows others have posted this week.
