How High's The Water Mama?

Written and
Performed By: Johnny Cash

How high's the water, mama?
Two feet high and risin'
How high's the water, papa?
Two feet high and risin'

(Baptizing Hole for Local Churches -
                     May 2011 Flood)

We can make it to the road in a homemade boat
That's the only thing we got left that'll float
It's already over all the wheat and the oats,
Two feet high and risin'

(Cuban Raft washed ashore in Florida in 1989 -
On display at Ponce Inlet Lighthouse, Daytona)

How high's the water, mama?
Three feet high and risin'
How high's the water, papa?
Three feet high and risin'

(Garrett Hollow- Bowling Green, Ky. -
               Flood of April 2011)

Well, the hives are gone,
I've lost my bees
The chickens birds are sleepin'
In the willow trees
Cow's in water up past her knees,
Three feet high and risin'

(Bird in tree in my back yard)
How high's the water, mama?
Four feet high and risin'
How high's the water, papa?
Four feet high and risin'

(Nolin River Dam - Flood of May 2011)

(Nolin River Dam -   Normal Winter Pool)

Hey, come look through the window pane,
The bus is comin',
gonna take us to the train
Looks like we'll be blessed with a little more rain,
4 feet high and risin'

(My back yard - February 2012)

How high's the water, mama?
Five feet high and risin'
How high's the water, papa?
Five feet high and risin'

(Nolin Dam 2011)

Well, the rails are washed out north of town
We gotta head for higher ground
We can't come back till the water comes down,
Five feet high and risin'

(Moutardier Campsite 2011)

Well, it's five feet high and risin'

(Barren River - Bowling Green 2011)

Though any flood in our area has never nor will ever be as bad as anything the folks along the coast are dealing with, with Hurricane Issac, I thought I would use this song and some pictures from flooded areas around my hometown.

  1. Your areal looks like ours. We don't get much flooding here except near the rivers but nothing like the Gulf is getting. It still seems like a lot when it headed into our yards though.

    I love that song!

  2. We traveled through lower MO into KY last year after the floods, when the roads had been opened, and it was such a devastating sight. We have had high water, and I once nearly lost a car in floodwaters, but our personal home has never been threatened. My heart goes out to those people who struggle with it often. Very good pairing of song and photos!

  4. Good song; great photos to go with it.
Keeps some perspective on the rain and floods.
