Around Town

It has been a mostly cloudy week in our little corner of the world, so I thought I would post a few shadowy pictures that I have taken over the past few weeks.

On the left is the view from our office looking up College Street toward WKU's Cherry Hall. On the right is the Amphitheater also on WKU's campus. The columns are a very popular spot for photos, especially at Prom time.

I couldn't post pictures of WKU without adding one of our beloved mascot, Big Red.

Next we have a few shadows from the local UAW Hall.  My Dad was a teamster and so is one of my brothers, so the Teamster's Logo is a well recognized symbol in my life.

The Justice Center is at the end of the block from our office. It is a beautiful building and one that we frequent often, though I do not think that I will ever feel totally comfortable in a Court setting.

I do enjoy seeing the building at night with all the lights.

The group's name, adapted in 1999, is derived from the word shideezhi - a Navajo term meaning "my little sister".

You always said that I have multiple personalities.
And, I bounce around somewhere between my dreams and reality.

(At Home 2005)
So where'd you dig up the audacity to ask me,
How we've all been doing.
Since you broke our hearts,
(well so far).

Number 5 just cries a river a minute,

(My Daughter at Home 2012)

7 wants to tie you up and drown you in it.

(50s Prime Time Cafe - Disney World 2007)

Yeah, 14 just wants to say so long, bygones.

(Me - 1979)

32 wants to do things to you that'll make you blush.

(At Home 2005)

10 will key the El Camino that you love so much.

(Me - 1980)

And there ain't nobody wants to mess with 23.

(Biltmore Estate - Ashville, North Carolina 2007)

Oh, lucky 4 you tonight,
I'm just me.

(Hyatt Hotel - Louisville, Ky. 2011)

I guess this party's more than your new Barbie bargained for,
She's got you by the sleeve slowly easing towards the door.

(Memphis 2009)
She's probably right,
You should be movin' on,
Don't know how long,

We can behave.
Better have the valet get your car,

(cause you know how women are).

(Edmonson County Fair Parade - 2011)

Number 5 just cries a river a minute,

(Hilton Head Island 2007)

7 wants to tie you up and drown you in it.

Forgiveness is the key,
According to my shrink.

But it's not just up to me,
(I don't know girls, what d'ya think?).

I heard this song this past weekend and it has been stuck in my head ever since, so I decided to use it for my theme song entry. I really like SheDaisy and have three of their albums. If you haven't heard them, I highly recommend that you give them a listen, especially their Christmas album. Their version of "Deck The Halls" is Amazing! Hope you enjoy!

Downtown Shadows

A few weeks ago, while stopping by the office to drop off supplies, I decided to walk around a bit. It was such a nice sunny day. Just across the street is the Old Courthouse, it is a very pretty area. On one side is a long courtyard with a gazebo which is often used for photos after weddings held in the Courthouse as well as a memorial area. (I took photos here too and will post them on a later date). The other side of the Courthouse has a small park and here is where I discovered several wonderful shadows. It was a Saturday and few people were out and about in the Courthouse area. I was able to walk around and take photographs without any interruptions and without people getting in my shots.

This is a view of the side of the old Courthouse. The fire escape was casting its shadow on the side of the building.

I was able to get a close up shot of the shadow.

At the end of the shadow was a doorway. I first noticed the rounded archway over the door, then I saw the iron decorative section above the door inside the arch. It too was casting shadows.

Near the back of the Courthouse is another building that houses the Drug Task Force and the Emergency Management Offices. This is the handicap ramp leading into that building. It too was creating shadows.

Here is a street view of the Task Force Building and the Courthouse courtyard. We often hear children playing in this area. A daycare is just around the corner and they often bring the children to the courtyard to play. It is a totally fenced in area with trees, flowers and a couple of benches and concrete tables.

This was written on the sidewalk between the courtyard and the neighboring Church.
I could tell that other things had been written/drawn there also, but they had been partially washed away.

The gate leading into the area had small shadows as well and the stepping stone path to the benches under the trees was a very peaceful and serene area.

I rather enjoyed being able to walk around in this area by myself. This is usually a very occupied area, with people going back and forth between the buildings, not to mention the children playing here.

Go To Sleep You Little Babe

Written By: Gillian Welch, T-Bone Burnett, Alan Lomax, Sidney Carter
Performed By: Alison Krauss, Emmylou Harris, and Gillian Welch

If you have seen the movie, Oh Brother Where Art Thou, you will remember this song from the scene with the "Sirens" (Women by the water).I have seen this movie several times, I have the soundtrack album and have always liked this song. I had never really given much thought to the meaning of the song, until I began this post. In researching the song I have found several very different meanings for this particular song. A short synopsis for each meaning I have found is below:

1.     Some say it is a song about temptation and seduction.

2.     Some say it is about an older women telling a baby that its mother has gone away (with her red shoes
on - meaning to be a prostitute) and that the father has died. This older person is planning to poison the
baby (honey in the rock - lay your bones on the alabaster stone). Knowing that what they are doing is
wrong, but they are saving the baby from a horrible life with no one to care for it.

3.     Others say that it is a slave-style song about a mammy/grandmother caring for the baby since the
mother is gone and the father is presumably dead. This person is trying to care for the baby but with
        few means of doing so.

Give it a listen and see what you think!

Go to sleep you little baby, (go to sleep you little baby).

(My Son at Grandparent's House 1985)

Go to sleep you little baby, (go to sleep you little baby).
Your momma's gone away and your daddy's gone to stay,
Didn't leave nobody, but the baby.

(My Son - Lindseyville, Ky. 1987)

Go to sleep you little baby, (go to sleep you little baby).

(My Son at Home 1987)

Go to sleep you little baby, (go to sleep you little baby).

(My Son at Grandma's 1992)

Everybody's gone in the cotton and the corn,
Didn't leave nobody, but the baby.

(Cotton Field - Murfreesboro, Tennessee)

You're a sweet little baby, (you're a sweet little baby).

(My Daughter 8 months old - With Trophy Won in Pageant)

You're a sweet little baby ,(you're a sweet little baby).

(my Daughter - In Beauty Pageant 1998)

Honey and the rock and the sugar don't stop,
Gonna bring a bottle to the baby.

Don't you weep pretty baby, (don't you weep pretty baby).

(Me and My Son - 6 months old - 1986)

Don't you weep pretty baby, (don't you weep pretty baby).
